Rituals for Wellness with Kathryn Narelle, Founder of Gracious Minds
As the cooler months roll in, it’s essential to prioritise wellness rituals that keep you feeling balanced and rejuvenated. Far from being indulgent, allowing space in our lives for self-care is a valuable, long-term stress-management tool. We spoke to Gracious Minds ' founder, Kathryn Narelle, about the inspiration behind her brand, her best wellness secrets, and favourite ways to reset, recharge, and reduce stress.
"I wanted to create something different — a holistic skincare brand that felt like coming home to yourself. A brand that embraces every stage of life and encourages ritual, reflection, and self-compassion, rather than chasing unrealistic ideals."
Firstly, tell us a little about yourself!
Hi, I’m Kat, the founder of Gracious Minds. I’m also a wife and a proud mother to my son, Sebastian, who’s nearly 10 (which still amazes me every day!). I have a deep love for yoga, animals, and exploring the richness of spirituality and religion. These practices keep me grounded and curious.
How did the idea for Gracious Minds first ignite?
The initial vision for Gracious Minds really came from a place of self-discovery — from learning to slow down and understand what it truly means to live in the present moment. In my 20s, I felt incredibly lost and disconnected from myself. I was working long hours, fully immersed in the "girl boss" culture at the time, believing that success was what defined me. I used alcohol as a way to cope and “switch off” at night, but it wasn’t sustainable — I was getting really sick and found myself in and out of hospital.
Turning 30 felt like a light switch moment. I knew something had to change. I started practicing yoga, and began taking proper care of my skin, and gradually, my whole lifestyle shifted. My friendship circle evolved, too — many of the people who came into my life were from the Baháʼí community. While I’m not a Baháʼí myself, I have so much love and respect for the people and their values. That period marked a huge turning point for me — it’s where the roots of Gracious Minds really began to grow.
"I really believe in the power of antioxidants to support the skin, mind, and body from the inside out — they’re an essential part of setting myself up for the day."
I’ve always had a deep passion for skincare, but I struggled to connect with a lot of the messaging in the industry — especially the focus on “anti-aging” and youth serums. It never sat right with me. I wanted to create something different — a holistic skincare brand that felt like coming home to yourself. A brand that embraces every stage of life and encourages ritual, reflection, and self-compassion, rather than chasing unrealistic ideals.
What are your daily nonnegotiable wellness rituals?
My mornings always begin with antioxidants — both inside and out. I start with a Kakadu plum powder drink, and I use Kakadu plum in my skincare routine too, layering both Plum Royale and Alpha Berry serums. I really believe in the power of antioxidants to support the skin, mind, and body from the inside out — they’re an essential part of setting myself up for the day. I also practice morning pages, a form of subconscious journaling from The Artist’s Way — it’s a beautiful tool that supports creativity and clarity, and it’s become a spiritual ritual for me. Most mornings I’ll also go to the gym, which helps me feel grounded and energised.
Evenings are all about winding down. Once my son is asleep, I focus on skin rejuvenation with vitamin A botanicals (Photosynthesis retinol alternative) I pair this with meditation using sound frequencies — something that’s become a deeply healing and important part of my wellness journey.
What are your tips for creating a spa in our own bathrooms?
Start by finding scents that truly resonate with you — scent is such a powerful tool for relaxation and presence. Explore different essential oils and notice how each one makes you feel. Whether it's grounding sandalwood , uplifting citrus, or calming lavender, discovering what speaks to you personally is key.
Next, choose skincare that feels aligned with your values — whether it’s Gracious Minds or another brand, look for products that are natural, healing, and supportive of your wellness. I truly believe the words we see and use matter. Packaging and product copy can subtly impact our self-perception on a subconscious level. Opt for skincare that uses positive, empowering language.
Could you give us a tip for full body relaxation?
One of my favourite ways to unwind is by listening to 936 Hz sound frequencies — they’re deeply calming and help bring the body and mind into a more peaceful, connected state. I also love incorporating body massage, using nourishing oils to release physical tension and bring presence back into the body. Pairing this with the 4-7-8 breathing technique — inhaling for 4 seconds, holding for 7, and exhaling for 8 — can be incredibly grounding. It’s a simple, beautiful way to reset your nervous system and create a moment of full-body relaxation.
What is your favourite Gracious Minds product?
Oh can I answer this? ;) at the moment – Plum Royale as its very potent antioxidant elixir with my favourite Australian native botanicals.
Thinking about relaxation holistically, what else can we do over the colder months to keep feeling our best?
As the seasons shift, it’s a beautiful time to adjust your space and routines to feel more grounded. Start by switching up your bed sheets to ones that feel soft, warm, and inviting. Earthy, grounding tones can help create a calm atmosphere and signal to the body that it’s time to slow down.
Winter is also when our skin needs extra care. Hydration becomes essential — I love using Green Genes Superfood Hydration Face Cream for a nourishing, supportive layer. For the body, I lean into deeper, smoky scents like Ceremonial Oud Remedial Body Oil with palo santo and sandalwood. It’s such a beautiful ritual for warming the body and calming the senses.
You can also try candle gazing — a meditative wellness practice that’s exactly as it sounds. Simply sit in stillness and softly focus on the flame. It’s a way to return to yourself at the end of a long day and quiet the mind. One of my favourite quotes from Eckhart Tolle says it perfectly: “Realise deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life.”
